Yokohama has grown as an international port since Japan's opening at the end of the Edo period, where the futuristic Minato Mirai coexists with the historic Chinatown and the Western houses of Yamate. Reachable from Tokyo in a short train ride, it can be enjoyed as a day trip including the night views. With the open waterfront, street food in one of Japan's largest Chinatowns, and retro warehouse districts, each area has its own character, making Yokohama especially rewarding to explore on foot.

In Minato Mirai, the Landmark Tower, the giant Ferris wheel, and the seaside promenades create a quintessential port scene. The Red Brick Warehouse is a commercial complex housed in historic buildings, with events and dining. Yokohama Chinatown is a lively district of hundreds of shops where dim sum and Chinese street food are the highlight. Touring the Western houses of Yamate and Harbor View Park captures the exotic mood of the opening era. At night, the Minato Mirai skyline is beautiful and a perfect way to end the day.

Yokohama's main areas are easy to cover by the Minato Mirai Line and on foot, and you can walk from Sakuragicho through the Red Brick area to Chinatown. Minato Mirai and Chinatown get especially crowded on weekends and holidays, so starting in the morning is more comfortable. In Chinatown, sampling small portions across several shops is the most satisfying approach. The waterfront can be chilly with wind, so a layer is wise when enjoying the night views.
