Sendai, the largest city in Tohoku, is called the 'City of Trees' for its lush street greenery and parks. Originating as the castle town of the warlord Date Masamune, it retains sights tied to Date culture such as the Sendai Castle ruins and Zuihoden mausoleum. With excellent Shinkansen access, it also serves as a convenient base for trips toward Matsushima and Yamagata. Local specialties like gyutan (beef tongue), zunda mochi, and sasa-kamaboko are plentiful, letting you enjoy urban comfort alongside Tohoku's food culture.

From the Sendai Castle ruins (Aoba Castle) you can survey the city, and the equestrian statue of Date Masamune is a symbol of Sendai. Zuihoden, known for its lavish decoration, is a striking mausoleum of the Date family. The covered arcades downtown are convenient for shopping and dining, with many renowned gyutan restaurants. A short trip away lies Matsushima, one of Japan's three great views, where you can enjoy the calm bay dotted with islands and the scenery from sightseeing boats.

Central Sendai's main sights are efficiently covered by subway and the Loople Sendai sightseeing loop bus. Matsushima is easy to reach in about 30 minutes by JR, and a half day allows a boat cruise and island strolling. Popular gyutan restaurants get busy at lunch, so shifting your timing helps avoid lines. Winters bring snow and cold, so warm clothing and non-slip shoes are reassuring. As a base for the wider Tohoku region, planning with travel times in mind keeps the trip comfortable.
