Plan a rewarding Nikko trip with guidance on its World Heritage shrines including Toshogu, the nature of Oku-Nikko such as Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, and autumn color on the Irohazaka road — feasible even as a day trip from Tokyo.

Nikko brings together a group of World Heritage shrines and temples, led by Toshogu enshrining Tokugawa Ieyasu, with the grand mountain nature of Oku-Nikko. About two hours from Tokyo, the shrines alone can be done as a day trip, but extending to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji is more relaxed with an overnight stay. The autumn colors of the Irohazaka road and Senjogahara are especially renowned, and the area changes dramatically with the seasons.

Toshogu is known for its intricate carvings and the Yomeimon gate, and pairing it with Futarasan Shrine and Rinno-ji is the classic way to tour the shrine area. Crossing the Irohazaka road toward Oku-Nikko reveals the high drop of Kegon Falls and the quiet expanse of Lake Chuzenji, a scenic contrast to the shrines. Senjogahara is good for hiking with seasonal plant life and views, and continuing to Yumoto Onsen offers the atmosphere of a mountain hot-spring retreat.

Because Nikko's shrine area and Oku-Nikko are separated, checking bus frequency and travel times helps you plan efficiently. The Irohazaka road is very crowded in autumn and prone to traffic, so early-morning travel or weekday visits are more comfortable. The mountains are cool, and Oku-Nikko is colder than the town, so a layer is wise in any season. Shrines have set visiting hours, so starting in the morning lets you enjoy them without rushing.
