Plan a rewarding Kamakura trip with guidance on temples and shrines such as Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in, and Hasedera, plus strolls along the Enoden line and the Shonan coast — satisfying even as a day trip from Tokyo.

Kamakura is an ancient capital that served as the seat of a medieval shogunate, prized for its many temples and shrines set close to the Shonan coast. Reachable from Tokyo in about an hour, it makes a fulfilling day trip. The Enoden railway threads along the shore and through neighborhoods, so the views from the train and its retro stations become part of the sightseeing itself. The blend of an old capital's calm with the openness of the sea defines Kamakura.

Kamakura's symbol is the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in, whose large open-air figure is well worth seeing. Hasedera is loved for its seasonal flowers and sea views, and is especially popular in hydrangea season. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, with its raised Dankazura approach, anchors a visit. Komachi-dori street is ideal for snacking and souvenirs, and riding the Enoden toward Inamuragasaki or Enoshima rewards you with Shonan coastal scenery.

Kamakura is best explored on foot with the Enoden and buses, and the main temples and shrines cluster within a fairly close range. Famous spots for hydrangeas and autumn leaves get very crowded on weekends and at peak times, so an early start is more comfortable. The Enoden fills up in tourist seasons and boarding can take time. Many temples have slopes and stone steps, so comfortable shoes help, and the coast can feel chilly with wind, which is worth planning for.
